Is an electric car right for your everyday?

Start with your parking, charging and usual journeys. A practical checklist for the questions to ask before choosing an EV.

Choosing an EV starts with the way you use a car. Before comparing a long list of specifications, write down a normal week of driving and the longer journeys you make occasionally.

Start where the car spends the night

Can you charge where you park? Discuss the installation, electrical supply and any permissions with the property owner and a qualified installer. If home charging is unavailable, look at the public stops you could realistically use during a normal week.

Compare the same version of each car

Battery options and variants can have different range figures, charging limits and equipment. Keep the exact variant name beside every specification. A certified range figure is a comparison point, not a guarantee for your drive.

Our vehicle guides keep published specifications and their sources together. The comparison page helps you examine the differences.

Write down the complete cost

Ask for an itemised vehicle quote and charging installation estimate. Use your electricity tariff and the tariffs at the public chargers you expect to visit. Include insurance, finance and maintenance in your own comparison rather than assuming a universal saving.

NITI Aayog’s e-AMRIT tools include home, public and journey charging calculators. Check current eligibility directly before counting any incentive in a purchase decision.

Take your questions on the test drive

Try the seating, luggage space, controls and visibility. Ask the dealer to explain the charging connection, app setup, warranty conditions and local service support for that exact variant.

The useful choice is the car that fits your life—and a charging routine you can live with.
